Photographic Book Layout

Japanese Wooden Boatbuilding

This deluxe, hardcover publication documents the process of designing and building several types of traditional Japanese wooden boats. Lavishly photographed and illustrated by the author, its a visual delight printed on premium quality, heavy-weight paper with a sleek surface finish.

The design employs a clean, two-column layout to allow for hundreds of medium to oversized photographs while keeping the page count controlled. All chapters open (and occasionally close) with a full-page facing photo with caption, inspired by the layout style of National Geographic magazine articles, which focus on sumptuous and detailed visuals. The fonts used are simple and clean to avoid distracting from the imagery. All boat and process illustrations by the author were manually retraced in Illustrator to enhance clarity and consistency.

Extra features include custom-designed and printed endpapers in a subtley-textured monotone, and copper-hued headbands, footbands and ribbon. Though incredibly extensive in scope, this project was an absolute joy to work on and well worth the effort, as the finished product came together beautifully.
